Madambakkam Pond: Blue-Green Amidst the Grey

Madambakkam Pond: Blue-Green Amidst the Grey

Madambakkam Pond is located in the Madambakkam neighborhood of Tambaram in Chennai Metropolitan Area. Positioned to the west of Madambakkam Lake(restored by E.F.I), the pond spans an area of 1.5 acres and serves as a critical water source for over 10 acres of fruit-bearing, native vegetation.

The Madambakkam Pond was overrun by invasive weed species prior to its restoration by E.F.I. The pictures below give a hint of the pond before restoration.

E.F.I in collaboration with the Greater Chennai Corporation restoring 1 pond and is also establishing another new pond within the premises under NNT

E.F.I’s Restoration Efforts

Deweeding: The surrounding 2.5 acres were cleared of invasive weed species and other thorny shrubs, contributing to improved water quality and encouraging the growth of native plants.

Desilting: Desilting was conducted over 1.5 acres, with 7,047 cubic meters of soil removed. This has improved the water retention capacity of the pond.

Bund Creation: The height of the pond’s bund was raised to 3 feet, and the width was expanded to around 4-5 feet, increasing the pond’s ability to retain water during periods of rainfall.

Nesting Islands: 3 nesting islands were established within the pond to provide safe habitats for local flora and fauna.

After Restoration

The Madambakkam Pond remains a key ecological asset amidst the rapid urbanization in Madambakkam. The construction of residential buildings and infrastructure has created a noticeable contrast to the natural environment. Despite this, the Madambakkam pond continues to offer an important green space for city residents, providing necessary irrigation and contributing to the area’s biodiversity.
