The last week of October, the Lancet Countdown released their 2024 global report on health and climate. As the effects of climate change on public health increase in frequency and severity year over year, these annual reports inform worldwide climate conversations. The Lancet Countdown makes the health and climate change connection clear, as well as the urgent need for action to protect health.
Key messages highlighted for this year include:
- Individuals in all countries are facing all-time high threats to their health and wellbeing.
- Ongoing fossil fuel investments by governments and large industries are reducing opportunities to mitigate climate impacts.
- Cross-sectoral collaboration to align climate policies, infrastructure, and economics are necessary to protect health.
Understanding the current state of climate and health is vital. Recognizing what we risk in inaction is also important. And urging high-level action can lead to greater results.
At ecoAmerica, we recognize that the health risks and impacts of climate change are increasing and dire. For some, these facts are enough to instigate action. But for many others, all that is left is a sense of dread and paralyzation. We demonstrate that mitigating the effects of climate change does not have to mean far-away, high-level policies and advocacy. It can begin in your own home.
Everyone has a role to play in taking steps toward a healthier and more sustainable future. Learn about the local climate risks in your area. Talk with your friends, neighbors, and communities about collective action you can take. Advocate for policies by engaging with elected officials. Become a Climate Ambassador to feel better equipped to discuss climate from a health perspective. Climate change affects each community, family, and person differently, but everyone has an opportunity to engage in climate action.
